Springboard Helps Paris-Based Andrea Natural Air Purification System Grow
Paris, France-based LaboGroup has created a unique new technology that utilizes the purifying power of natural plants to create clean air. They recently tapped Springfield-based Springboard Group to create consumer branding for this unique technology.
Since the late 1980s, scientists have sought to improve the efficiency of living plants to naturally clean the air of harmful pollutants. Designed by renowned French designer Mathieu Lehanneur in collaboration with Harvard professor David Edwards, Andrea advances on these efforts with a world-class design, elegant simplicity, and improved filtration. Released as part of the 2007 opening of Edwards’ Paris-based art and design innovation center Le Laboratoire, Andrea continuously draws polluted air from the environment and passes it across living surfaces that absorb and metabolize gaseous pollutants. The biochemical transformation of waste, through the plant’s natural metabolic activity, eliminates the pollution rather than collecting it on filter surfaces.
Andrea and Lehanneur traveled to MOMA in New York city for the Design and the Elastic Mind exhibition in the winter of 2008 and won distinction as an Invention of the Year in Popular Science in the spring of 2008. The product was unveiled at a major media event in New York City this week. The product technology was developed based on work by NASA and ultimately earned Lehanneur a Popular Science magazine 2008 Invention of the Year accolade. The product design has also been showcased at the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
